Lawrence Looks at Books

Understanding Manga and Anime. Robin E. Brenner. 333p. Westport, CT: Libraries Unlimited, 2007. 978-1-59158-332-5; 2007-9773. $40.

Understanding Manga and AnimeWith this guide, teen librarian Robin Brenner introduces the uninitiated to the world of manga and anime. Riding the wave of the increasing popularity of graphic novels and video games, Japanese manga has become a major seller in the United States. The sales of manga now dwarf the revenue from comic books in this country. However, like comic books before them, this highly visual form of storytelling is much maligned and misunderstood. The wholesale translation of bestselling Japanese titles has often served to increase misunderstandings because of differences in cultural traditions. Brenner illuminates many such sources of confusion. Her guide commences with an overview of the history of Japanese manga and anime, including the impact World War II, western culture and television. A second chapter examines traditional audiences, character development, visual symbolism, and layout. Cultural differences, particularly in regards to the treatment of nudity, gender roles, violence and religion, receive special attention. Three chapters describe the various genres of manga, from teen romance and humor to action, adventure and fantasy. Brenner also offers insights to librarians, educators and others for understanding the fan community supporting manga. Her helpful suggestions include ideas for building and promoting a collection. Brief lists of definitions and frequently asked questions supplement the text. Though intended for novices of all types, Brenner's guide provides librarians with an excellent tool for exploiting this burgeoning art form to support reading, literacy and libraries.
